What Is a Conceptual Model and Why Do You Need One?

A conceptual model gives structure to your thesis and makes your research design transparent to readers and supervisors. It shows at a glance which concepts you are studying and how you expect them to relate to one another. You base your conceptual model on the hypotheses you derived from the literature, which is why it makes sense to finish your theoretical framework first before you start drawing.

Where Does a Conceptual Model Belong in Your Thesis?

Place your conceptual model where it gives readers the most clarity and where your program expects it. At university level, the most common position is at the end of the theoretical framework, right before your hypotheses. A short reference in the text helps readers find it: “Figure 1 shows the conceptual model that summarizes the relationships between the key variables.”

At a university of applied sciences, you often place the conceptual model in the introduction or at the opening of the theoretical framework, so readers have an overview from the start. If your model is very extensive, move it to an appendix and refer to it clearly in the main text. The rule of thumb is simple: put the conceptual model where it adds the most value for your reader.

What Does a Conceptual Model with Direct Relationships Look Like?

The most straightforward form of a conceptual model shows direct relationships between variables. A psychology student studying trauma, for example, might include individual personality traits, the severity of a traumatic event, and environmental factors as independent variables, with the development of trauma as the dependent variable. Each arrow in the model runs from an independent variable toward the dependent variable, indicating a predicted causal influence. This type of conceptual model is a good starting point before you consider adding moderation or mediation.

How Does Moderation Work in a Conceptual Model?

In a conceptual model with moderation, a moderator variable changes the strength or direction of the relationship between an independent and a dependent variable. You are essentially testing an interaction effect: does the relationship between X and Y differ depending on the level of a third variable Z? A common example is gender as a moderator of the relationship between stress and burnout. In your conceptual model, you represent the moderator with an arrow that points to the relationship between the two main variables, not to the dependent variable directly.

How Does Mediation Work in a Conceptual Model?

Mediation describes a situation in which the effect of an independent variable on a dependent variable runs through a third variable: the mediator. An example: parental smoking behavior (independent variable) may predict a child’s own smoking behavior (dependent variable) through the child’s attitude toward smoking (mediator). In a conceptual model with mediation, you draw the mediator between the two main variables, with arrows leading from the independent variable to the mediator and from the mediator to the dependent variable. A direct path between the independent and dependent variable is often included as well.

Common Mistakes When Creating a Conceptual Model

Many students make the same mistakes when working on their conceptual model. The most common one is starting too early, before the theoretical framework is ready. Without a solid theoretical basis, you cannot justify the relationships you draw. A second frequent error is including too many variables, which makes the model difficult to read, or too few, which limits the depth of your study. The relationships in your conceptual model must follow directly from the literature, not from personal assumptions.

Consistency also matters. Use the same terms in your model as in the rest of your thesis. Switching between different labels for the same concept creates confusion. Ask your supervisor or a fellow student to review the model, a fresh perspective often reveals issues you overlook yourself. Avoid these pitfalls and your conceptual model will be a clear and convincing part of your thesis.
